Never a dull moment ....

On Tuesday, May 19 I had BIG plans - a shower, folding some laundry, going through clothes in Brooke's room and maybe even a trip to the hairdresser to get a quick trim. Kristen was fed and down for a snooze so I took advantage of that time to head for the shower. I was barely wet when I turned and slipped and started to fall. Of course I fell in the direction of the shower curtain and started to fall "out" of the tub. Our bathroom is on the tiny side and the sink is right there, on my way down I smashed my forehead on the side of the sink. At first I just thought big bump, big headache and maybe a black eye then I saw the blood on the bottom of the tub. "CRAP!" I took a quick look in the mirror after I got the bleeding to stop and knew immediately that I was going to need stitches. In other words, 2 Tuesdays in a row and 2 Emergency Room visits. I knew it would take too long for Paul to get home so my mom took me to the hospital and Auntie Robin came and picked up Kristen and took her back to the office. We were in and out of the hospital in 1 hour leaving with a mild concussion, 3 stitches, a black eye and a tetanus shot booster. I had the stitches removed on Sunday and the bruise is almost gone. Knock on wood, this week has been quiet.

On the mend ....

Today Kristen was 1 week old and its been an interesting week. I opted to have an epidural during labor and had a leakage of spinal fluid as a result. Apparently this happens in 1 to 5% of these procedures. The side effect is a wicked intense spinal headache that is only relieved by laying flat. I was able to manage the pain in the hospital but when I got home it was not so easy to stay flat. Yesterday, Paul left work and came home to take me to the hospital for a blood patch. They basically give you another epidural and then draw blood from your arm and inject it into your back. The pain went from a 10 to a 3 while they were injecting the blood and was completely gone this morning. I have a slight backache from the patch, but it is nothing compared to the pain that I had been dealing with. We opted to leave Kristen with Carol and Brooke to avoid the exposure to all the germs and interesting characters who hang out in ER waiting rooms in the middle of the afternoon. Kristen was great for Carol. Here's a shot of her on her first baby-sitting adventure.
